The Boston Preservation Alliance is planning a one-day symposium on Campus Heritage Planning (at the Boston Architectural College campus) in Fall 2007. This event will bring together Boston’s leaders in higher education, campus planners, public officials, and other interested professionals to share information and ideas on how Boston’s universities can optimize the potential of their historic and cultural resources.

Boston’s colleges and universities are vital engines within our local economy, drawing hundreds of thousands of students, scholars, and researchers to the city each year. Every institution in Boston contributes to our distinct “brand” of culture and identity. In 2007, many of the city’s academic institutions are initiating exciting and, in many cases, unprecedented capital development projects. This situation presents an opportunity for universities to maximize the benefits of their historic buildings and contexts, and to promote a heightened awareness of the physical and cultural interrelationships between the institution and the city.

The symposium seeks to achieve the following objectives for positive change:

to provide colleges and universities with insights for undertaking historic preservation, adaptive re-use, and compatible new construction projects on their campuses;
to explore best practices for accommodating institutional development within existing built environments that will sustain enrollments;
to develop and share strategies for enhancing the student experience by taking full advantage of Boston’s historic and cultural assets;
to promote city-wide enthusiasm for Boston’s colleges and universities as contributors to Boston’s distinguished history;
to put Boston at the forefront of international thinking about the role of academic institutions as agents for positive change historic urban settings.

John Cohen’s photographs are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Cohen studied under Joseph Albers and Herbert Matter at Yale University, and his images have been published in Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and Aperture. Cohen’s award-winning films have been seen around the world, and his band, The New Lost City Ramblers, has received several Grammy nominations.

The primary focus of the work of Andrea Robbins and Max Becher is the transportation of place: situations in which one limited or isolated place strongly resembles another distant one. Everywhere, not only in the new world, such situations are accumulating and accepted as genuine locales. Traditional notions of place, in which culture and geographic location neatly coincide, are being challenged by legacies of slavery, colonialism, holocaust, immigration, tourism, and mass-communication. Whether the subject is Germany in Africa, Germans dressing as Native Americans, American towns dressed as Germany, New York in Las Vegas, New York in Cuba, or Cuba in exile, our interest tends to be a place out of place with its various causes and consequences.

The work of RISD Professor of Photography Joe Deal is concerned primarily with the relationships between nature and culture. He is interested not only in what can be seen traveling through a landscape but also in what is revealed or implied by its geology, history and the impact of human occupation on the landscape over time. Joe Deal’s photographs have appeared in many exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad and have been the subject of numerous articles and publications since the mid-1970s. His works were included in the groundbreaking 1975 exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man Altered Landscape, held at the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House. He is the recipient of two NEA Artists Fellowships and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.

Kerry Stuart Coppin holds faculty appointment as Associate Professor of Visual Arts and Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University. Coppin earned his MFA at RISD, where he studied with Harry Callahan, Ray Metzker and Aaron Siskind. His works are provocative photographic interpretations that elaborate and celebrate positive aspects of the Black community experience. Convinced that “the lives of black people are complex, and are therefore worthy of sophisticated critical analysis and reflection,” he uses photography to document and examine the image of Blacks in the Diaspora.

Focusing on an ordinary subject that we see each day, Alphabet presents 26 letters as more than just shapes for conveying information. Hosted by The Herb Lubalin Center of Design and Typography at The Cooper Union (October 11-27), the traveling exhibition features the work of 51 artists and designers and their inventive ways of interpreting the alphabet, ranging from graceful and polished to witty and subversive. The 63 alphabets featured in Alphabet were created by artists in North America, Europe and Asia, representing works from well-known typographers such as Ed Fella and Ken Barber to rising artists such as Sweden's Hjärta Smärta and Andrew Jeffrey Wright of Philadelphia's Space 1026.

Robert A.M. Stern is dean of the Yale School of Architecture, as well as a practicing architect, teacher and writer. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and received the AIA New York Chapter's Medal of Honor in 1984 and the Chapter's President's Award in 2001. He received the Athena Award from the Congress for the New Urbanism and the Board of Directors' Honor from the Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America in 2007. As founder and senior partner of Robert A. M. Stern Architects, he personally directs the design of each of the firm's projects.

Robert A. M. Stern Architects is comprised of 300 architects, landscape architects, interior designers and supporting staff. Over a 38-year history, the firm has established an international reputation with wide experience in residential, commercial and institutional work. As the practice has diversified, its geographical scope has widened to include current projects in Europe, Asia, South America and throughout the United States. Stern is also a member of the AD 100—Architectural Digest's selected list of the top 100 architects and interior designers who are working today. The lecture, which is hosted by The Cooper Union, is co-sponsored by Architectural Digest and the Municipal Art Society.

When Time Becomes Form is an ongoing performance series of long-durational work curated by Marina Abramovic for Artists Space. The performance series grows from Artists Space’s commitment to experimentation across all art forms and recent efforts to return performance art to its central position within the gallery’s activities and exhibitions. The series consists of twelve distinct, but interrelated, durational performances, each created and presented by a different performance artist, each of whom is a member of the Independent Performance Group (IPG). Each of these five-day performances explores and questions issues of concentration, will power, and determination, and uses the entire gallery space for 8 hours during each days of its presentation. The entire series will develop over the course of the next two and a half years.

To celebrate Storefront's 25th anniversary, and to reinforce the gallery’s ongoing commitment to generating dialogue and collaboration across geographic, ideological and disciplinary boundaries, this fall a curated micro-bookshop will be opening in the east end of the gallery.

This will be an unusual bookshop: its shelves will comprise a careful selection of books recommended by the artists, architects, writers, filmmakers and other key figures who have helped shape the gallery’s unique identity over the past 25 years.

Performance Z-A: a Pavilion and 26 Days of Events at Storefront

Twenty-five years ago, in September 1982, Storefront's first public event got underway in its original Prince Street location. Performance A-Z, organized by the gallery's founders Kyong Park and R L Seltman, and artist Arleen Schloss, was a 26-day sequence of performances by New York-based artists. Each of the 26 performers was allocated one evening slot. The event became a manifesto for the gallery's future programming: as Kyong Park wrote in his introduction, "Storefront supports the idea that art and design have the potential and responsibility to affect public policies which influence the quality of life and the future of all cities."

In late September 2007, Storefront will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a new edition of its first event. Entitled Performance Z-A, this 26-day celebration will be hosted in Petrosino Park, adjacent to Storefront, in a specially built pavilion designed by Korean architect Minsuk Cho. Organized by the three directors who have led Storefront over the past 25 years (Kyong Park, Sarah Herda and Joseph Grima), Performance Z-A will be an inclusive event involving not only performance artists but also representatives of all the disciplines that have participated in Storefront's program in the past decades: architects, artists, writers, researchers, filmmakers, photographers, musicians and more. For 26 days, from September 21 to October 16, 2007, the protagonists of Storefront's past, present and future will host 26 evening events including performances, concerts, open discussions, film screenings and interviews.

An exhibition at the Storefront for Art and Architecture, NYC

BIG is a Copenhagen based group of over 80 architects, designers, builders and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and development. BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. In their projects, BIG tests the effects of size and the balance of programmatic mixtures on the triple bottom line of the social, economical and ecological outcome. Like a form of programmatic alchemy, they create architecture by mixing conventional ingredients such as living, leisure, working, and shopping.

The exhibition will showcase some built works and a number of large-scale models illustrating proposals for innovative residential typologies, all of which are situated in Copenhagen. Focusing on Kløverkarrén, BIG House, the LEGO project, Mountain Dwellings and VM Houses (both designed in conjunction with JDS Architects), the exhibition presents a broad spectrum of the research that has gone into varying housing solutions for different generational attitudes and economical backgrounds.

Each project’s effect and reception is showcased dependant on to what extent it is already manifest in the public realm, ranging from images of life in the VM houses post-occupation, through the 250.000 piece LEGO model inhabited by 1000 LEGO people, to the excessive political debate about Kløverkarreen.

		Behind the Screen The Museum's core exhibition, Behind the Screen, illuminates the many processes involved in producing, marketing, and exhibiting the moving image, with more than a thousand film and television artifacts, computer-based interactive experiences, commissioned installations, audio-visual materials, and demonstrations of professional equipment and techniques.

		Digital Play Digital Play includes video arcade games, artworks, digital animations, and software toys, all of which are free to play. The works manifest different approaches to the theme of "action" through driving and fighting games, and music- and dance-oriented pieces.

		From Penny Arcade to Megaplex: A Special Exhibition in Honor of the 100th Anniversary of Loews This special exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of Loews, the oldest theater circuit in North America. From Penny Arcade to Megaplex: A Special Exhibition in Honor of the 100th Anniversary of Loews presents an unprecedented collection of artifacts from the history of this great American entertainment company, including rare promotional items, over 75 historic photographs, archival film footage of movie premieres, and architectural fragments of the lost temples of cinema that once commanded audiences in the thousands at the height of the Hollywood empire. This exhibition was made possible by a generous gift from Loews Cineplex Entertainment.
